What nutritional strategies have worked for you to help you lose body fat or gain muscle?

In my personal experience I find anything done to extremes becomes counter productive so with myself and with my clients I have found sticking to a balance nutritional strategy which includes a balanced quantity of carbohydrates, protein and fats have worked extremely well. All sources of foods typically are whole foods, not processed. Also utilizing low glycemic carbohydrates and lower fat proteins and keeping meal frequencies to every 2.5-3 hours. I am not a big believer in overdoing protein shakes and using them as meal replacements. I like to reserve their usage for post or pre workout!
